While exploring the vibrant Peru with Mr. YMC, one can't help but be mesmerised by the rich tradition of textiles and fibre arts that are still very much alive in this beautiful country. From the traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations to the more modern interpretations of these art forms such as crochet, Peru is a treasure trove for anyone interested in the world of textiles.
Peruvian textiles have a long and storied history, dating back thousands of years to the time of the Incas. The intricate patterns and vibrant colours used in traditional Peruvian textiles are a testament to the skill and creativity of the artisans who create them. Each piece tells a story, weaving together the past and the present in a beautiful tapestry of culture and art.
Most yarn used in these gorgeous crafts are made using fibres from the four Camelids found in Peru:
Llamas (pronounced Yamas), Alpacas, Vicuñas and Guanacos, and dyed using all natural products.
Llamas and Alpacas are both domesticated animals that are commonly used for their fibre (Alpacas are also broadly used for their meat) and Baby Alpaca is highly prized.
Guanacos and Vicuñas are wild and the Vicuñas especially are found only in the high Andes Mountains and had been on the verge of extinction. Vicuña fibre is the most expensive in the world! Vicuñas are sheared during chaccus (ceremonial roundups) in late May or June, after which the animals are released back into the wild.
