'Something for Kate' Granny Square

In early June I was in Sydney for the Australian Crochet Guild Conference (and I had a ball!).  While I was there I was rapt to be able to catch up with some of my gorgeous family!  Due to the numerous lockdowns here in Victoria Mr, YMC and I hadn't had much of a chance to visit our family in Sydney and this was the perfect opportunity!  We had an amazing time going to Vivid and spending time with my fabulous cousin Craig and his awesome wife Nyrelle and their absolutely adorable 2 girls Kate and Kara.

Kate told me that she still had the amigurumi toy that I had made her years ago and that she still slept with it!  Unfortunately I hadn't made anything for Kara and she let me know how I could sort this out for her....Kara wanted a Jaguar toy and both girls said that they would love a blanket!  Well, who am I to say no!

So, knowing that International Granny Square day was fast approaching (15th August) I hatched a plan to design a square for each of these gorgeous little humans!  I got the info about colours from each of them and even came up with the names for each design before I even knew what they would look like!  Something for Kate seemed like the perfect name (and super fab band as well) and for Kara I thought Kara's Dreams had a nice ring to it!  Now all I needed was the design!

July came and the release of the Barbie Movie was splashing pink everywhere I looked.  I knew Kate wanted Pink in her blanket and I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to splash some hues of my own!  So in one gorgeous granny (if I do say so myself) I have represented Something for Kate, an International Granny Square Day design and an homage to the Pink Queen herself, Barbie!

Materials:

• Fiddlesticks Superb 8
• White 70001
• Magenta 70003
• Pink 70034
• Light Grey 70030
• Watermelon 71008
• Fuschia 70004
• A relatively small amount of each colour used, however as I plan to make a blanket with these squares (design will be launched later this year) there will be no waste.
• 4 mm Hook (I used my trusty Tulip Etimo Red)
• Needle for weaving in ends
• Scissors
• Stitch markers

 

Stitches used UK terms - Intermediate pattern.  

This is an intermediate level pattern, knowledge of different stitches is necessary to complete this pattern.

I chose not to use abbreviations in this pattern.  I recently had someone mention to me that they struggle with abbreviations so I thought I would give it a go without them!

 

 

Round one

• Eight double crochet into a magic ring.
• Join with a slip stitch. (8 double crochet)
• (Alternatively chain 4 and join with a slip stitch.  Eight double crochet into the ring and join with a slip stitch)

 

Round Two

• Chain six and slip stitch into the same stitch. Slip stitch into the next stitch, chain six and slip stitch into the same stitch.  Repeat six more times. 
• Fasten off and weave in ends. (Eight petals)

 

 

Round Three

• Join your next colour  with a slip stitch to the top of any of your eight petals
• Chain three and slip stitch to the top of the next petal
• Repeat until the end of the road and join with a slip stitch to the first slip stitch.
• Fasten off and weave in ends. (Eight chain three spaces)

 

Round Four

• Join with a slip stitch in any chain three space
• Chain two (counts as one partly completed treble crochet), five treble cluster (close cluster with one chain - this does not count as a stitch) chain four, another five treble cluster in the same space, chain two and skip the next slip stitch.
• Five treble cluster into the next chain three space, (close cluster with one chain, does not count as a stitch) chain four, another five treble cluster in the same space, chain two and skip the next slip stitch.
• Repeat six more times and join with a slip stitch to the top of the first five treble cluster.  Finish off and weave in ends (Sixteen five treble clusters, eight chain four spaces and eight chain two spaces)

 

 

Round Five

 

• Slip stitch into any chain four space.  Chain three (counts as one treble), treble eight into the same chain soace.  Skip the next treble five cluster and double crochet into the chain two space. 
• Nine treble crochets into the next chain four space.  Skip the next treble five cluster and double crochet into the chain two space.  Repeat six more times and join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain three.
• Fasten off and weave in ends (Eight x nine treble petals)

 

Round Six

• Join with a standing back post double crochet around the fifth treble of any nine treble petal.
• One back post half treble around the next stitch.
• One back post treble around the next two stitches.
• Skip one treble.
• Complete a two double treble cluster on either side of the next double crochet (see photo below).

• One back post treble around the next two stitches.
• One back post half treble around the next stitch.
• One back post double crochet around the next stitch.
• One back post half treble around the next stitch.
• One back post treble around the next two stitches.
• Skip one treble.
• One double treble cluster in the space before the double crochet, chain three, one double treble cluster in the space after the double crochet (first corner made).
• Skip one treble.
• One back post treble around the next two stitches.

• One back post double crochet around the next stitch.
• One back post half treble around the next stitch.
• One back post treble around the next two stitches.
• Skip one treble.
• Complete a two double treble cluster on either side of the next double crochet.
• Skip one treble.
• One back post treble around the next two stitches.
• One back post half treble around the next stitch.
• One back post double crochet around the next stitch.
• One back post half treble around the next stitch.
• One back post treble around the next two stitches.
• Skip one treble.
• One double treble cluster in the space before the double crochet, chain three, one double treble cluster in the space after the double crochet (second corner made).

• Complete a two double treble cluster on either side of the next double crochet.

• Skip one treble.

• Join with a slip stitch to the first back post double crochet. 
• Fasten off weave in ends. (Four corners: two double treble clusters and three chains.  Four sides: eight treble crochet, four half treble crochet, two double crochet and one double treble crochet cluster)

 

 

Round Seven

• Join with a standing treble crochet in any corner chain three space.
• One front post treble crochet around the next double treble cluster.
• One treble in the next stitch.
• One half treble in the next three stitches.
• One double crochet in the next three stitches.
• One front post double crochet around the next double treble cluster.
• One double crochet in the next three stitches.
• One half treble in the next three stitches.
• One treble in the next stitch.
• One front post treble crochet around the next double treble cluster.
• One treble into the corner space, chain three.
• Repeat three more times and join with a slip stitch to the first standing treble crochet.  Fasten off and weave in ends. (Four Corners: two treble crochet and three chains, For sides: two front post treble crochet, one front post double crochet, two treble crochet, six half treble crochet and six double crochet)

 

 

Round Eight

• One standing half treble in any corner space. 
• One half treble crochet, chain two, two half treble crochet in the same corner space.
• One back loop only half treble crochet in every stitch across to the corner
• *Two half treble crochet in the next corner space, chain two, two half treble crochet in the same space.
• One back loop only half treble crochet in every stitch across to the corner *
• Repeat from * to * two more times and join with a slip stitch to the first standing half treble crochet.  Fasten off and weave in ends.  (Nineteen back loop only half treble crochet on each side. Four half treble crochet and two chains in each corner)

 

 

Round Nine

• Join with a standing double crochet in any corner.  Chain two and one double crochet in the same corner space.
• One back post double crochet in every stitch until you reach the corner. 
• *One double crochet, chain two and one double crochet in the next chain space.
• One back post double crochet in every stitch until you reach the corner.*
• Repeat from * to * twice more.  Join with a slip stitch to the first standing double crochet. Do not fasten off!  (23 back post double crochet on each side. Two double crochet and two chains in each corner)

 

Round Ten.

• One double crochet in the corner space, chain two, one double crochet in the same space.
• One double crochet in each stitch across to the corner.
• *One double crochet, chain two and one double crochet in the next chain space.
• One double crochet in every stitch until you reach the corner.*
• Repeat from * to * twice more.  Join with a slip stitch to the first standing double crochet. Fasten off and weave in ends. (25 back post double crochet on each side, two double crochet and two chains in each corner).
