Spring Into Creativity
Andrea ClementsShare
Spring has sprung here in the Southern Hemisphere and while some of us might still be experiencing some cool days and nights it is time to make room for inspiration, rediscover forgotten treasures and welcome a fresh season of creativity.
There’s something about spring that makes me want to throw open the windows, let the sunshine in and give everything a fresh start. The days are longer, the flowers begins to bloom and I feel the need to refresh and clean out!
If you’re like me and a knitter, crocheter, weaver, felter or general yarn enthusiast, chances are your creative space could do with a little springtime love! Perhaps your yarn stash has quietly multiplied over winter and has decided to invade every space. Maybe your project bags are overflowing, your hooks and needles have mysteriously scattered themselves around the house, or your collection of works in progress (WIPs) have developed a life of their own.

Sound familiar? Don't worry, you're in good company!
Spring is the perfect opportunity to refresh your craft space, rediscover forgotten treasures and give your creativity a little room to breathe. The best part is you don't need to spend a fortune on styling or expensive storage solutions. Sometimes, a little rearranging, a good declutter and a fresh perspective are all it takes.
So, grab a cuppa and let's get ready to spring into creativity!
1. Start With a Little Creative Clearing
Before you rush out to buy pretty storage baskets or reorganise your entire house, take a moment to look at your current craft space.
Is your favourite chair buried beneath a mountain of yarn? Are you spending more time searching for your crochet hook than actually crocheting? Have you forgotten what treasures are hiding at the bottom of your project basket?

It's time for a gentle reset.
Start small. You don't need to tackle everything in one afternoon. Choose one shelf, one drawer, one basket or even just the surface of your crafting table.
As you sort through your supplies, ask yourself a few simple questions:
- Do I use this regularly?
- Does this still inspire me?
- Do I know what project this belongs to?
- Could someone else make better use of this?
- Is this something I genuinely want to finish, or am I keeping it out of guilt?
Be kind to yourself during this process. Crafting should bring joy, not create another item on your to-do list. You don't need to finish every abandoned project or justify every ball of yarn you've ever purchased.
Sometimes, clearing the clutter is simply about making your favourite things easier to find and enjoy.
Remember, the goal isn't a perfect craft room; it's a space that makes you want to create.
2. Rediscover the Joy of Your Yarn Stash
Ah, the yarn stash. A magical place filled with possibility, inspiration and, occasionally, yarn you have absolutely no recollection of buying!
For many of us, collecting yarn is almost as enjoyable as using it. Those beautiful colours, delicious textures and special fibres are simply too tempting to resist. Sometimes, we buy yarn because we love it, without having the faintest idea what it will become (this is definitely me!).
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

However, spring is a wonderful time to revisit your stash and see it with fresh eyes.
Try a yarn stash refresh
- Sort by colour. Arrange your yarn into colour families and see what combinations emerge. You might discover a beautiful palette you hadn't considered before.
- Sort by fibre or weight. Group your wool, cotton, alpaca, silk blends and other fibres together. This makes choosing the right yarn for a future project much easier.
- Create a dedicated inspiration basket. Fill it with yarns that make your heart sing, without worrying about what they'll become just yet.
- Rediscover forgotten favourites. That special skein you bought six months ago might be exactly what you need for a new spring project.
- Make a plan for leftovers. Small amounts of yarn are perfect for granny squares, colourful stripes, scrappy blankets, crochet flowers and other little creative adventures.
- If you discover yarn that no longer suits your needs, consider swapping it with a friend, donating it to a community group or passing it on to another maker who will love it. We have a Fibre it Forward basket at Yarn Me Calm for exactly this purpose! We donate/pay it forward to others that may not be able to afford to purchase their yarn!

3. Give Your WIPs a Little Attention
Let's talk about those works in progress.
You know the ones. The cardigan that was going to be finished last winter. The blanket that seemed like a brilliant idea until you realised how many squares it required. The scarf that was abandoned when something more exciting came along.
Then of course there are the projects that have been sitting patiently in a basket, waiting for you to remember where you were up to!
Spring is a lovely time to reconnect with these projects and decide what happens next.

Gather your WIPs together and take a good look at them. Some might inspire you to pick up your hooks or needles immediately. Others might remind you why you put them aside in the first place.
- Choose one project you'd genuinely love to finish and make it your next priority.
- Put it on pause: Pack it away neatly, with the pattern, yarn and notes together, so it's easy to return to later.
- Reimagine it: Could the project become something smaller, simpler or entirely different?
- Let it go: If the joy has disappeared and you're keeping it out of obligation, it's okay to unravel it or pass the materials on.
You don't need to finish every project you start. Sometimes, the joy is in the beginning, ilearning, experimenting and making.
If you do decide to finish something, celebrate that achievement! Every completed project deserves a little moment of appreciation.
4. Create a Space That Inspires You
Your craft space doesn't need to be an entire room. It might be a corner of the lounge, a spare bedroom, a desk in the study or a favourite chair beside the window.
Wherever you create, think about how you can make the space more inviting.
Let the light in. Natural light can make colours easier to see and create a lovely atmosphere for crafting. If possible, position your favourite chair near a window.
Keep your essentials within reach. Store frequently used hooks, needles, scissors, stitch markers and measuring tapes in a container or basket nearby.
Make your current project visible. A dedicated project basket makes it easier to pick up where you left off, even if you only have ten minutes to spare.

Add something living. A little potted plant or vase of spring flowers can bring freshness and colour to your space.
Surround yourself with inspiration. Display a favourite finished project, a treasured handmade gift, a colour palette, photographs or a collection of beautiful yarns.
Create a comfortable spot. Good lighting, a supportive chair and somewhere to put your cuppa can make a world of difference.
Most importantly, make the space your own. It doesn't need to look like a picture in a magazine. It simply needs to feel like somewhere you want to spend time.
5. Organise Your Tools, Patterns and Notions
There are few things more frustrating than being in the middle of a project, finding your rhythm, and suddenly discovering that your favourite hook has disappeared (the story of my life).
A little organisation can help you spend less time searching and more time stitching.

Here are a few simple ideas:
- Keep crochet hooks and knitting needles together, organised by size.
- Use small containers for stitch markers, tapestry needles, buttons and other notions.
- Store patterns in labelled folders or notebooks.
- Keep project notes with the relevant yarn and pattern.
- Use project bags to keep each WIP's supplies together.
- Label yarn containers with fibre type, weight or colour family.
- Keep a notebook or digital list of projects you'd like to make.
- If you're someone who enjoys trying different techniques, consider creating a creative journal or grimoire to record yarn details, colour combinations, pattern notes, swatches, ideas and lessons learned along the way.
- Not only does this help keep your craft space organised, but it also creates a wonderful record of your creative journey.
If you discover that you own four pairs of scissors, three measuring tapes and enough stitch markers to supply a small army (or like me, a small country), well, at least you'll know exactly where they are!
6. Make Room for Something New
Once you've cleared a little space, it's time for the fun part: deciding what comes next!
Spring is full of colour, growth and fresh possibilities. Take inspiration from the world around you and let it influence your next creative adventure.

Perhaps it's time to try a fibre you've never worked with before. Maybe you've been wanting to learn a new stitch, experiment with colourwork, try weaving or explore the possibilities of felting.
You might feel inspired by the soft greens of new leaves, the bright colours of spring flowers, the blues of the coastal sky or the gentle neutrals of sand and stone.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Crochet a collection of colourful flowers.
- Make a lightweight cotton shawl or wrap.
- Experiment with a fresh colour palette for granny squares.
- Create a small project using leftover yarn.
- Try a new stitch or technique.
- Start a handmade gift for someone special.
- Join a workshop and learn something new.
- Choose one beautiful skein and let the yarn guide your creativity.
Remember, you don't need to embark on a large project to feel creatively refreshed. Sometimes, a little experiment or a few colourful stitches are enough to reignite your enthusiasm.

7. Clear Your Mind, Not Just Your Craft Space
There's another reason to embrace a spring craft refresh, and it has very little to do with storage boxes or tidy shelves.
Our surroundings can influence how we feel. When our creative space is crowded or disorganised, it can sometimes become difficult to focus or decide what to make next.
Taking time to sort, organise and refresh your space can become a mindful activity in itself.

As you work, slow down. Notice the colours and textures of your yarn. Enjoy the process of arranging your supplies. Take a moment to appreciate the projects you've completed and the skills you've developed.
You don't have to turn decluttering into another task to conquer. Think of it as an opportunity to reconnect with the things you love.
And once your space is refreshed, give yourself permission to sit down, pick up your project and simply enjoy making something with your hands.
No deadlines. No expectations. No pressure to produce something perfect.
Just you, your yarn and a little time to breathe.

Crafting is about so much more than the finished item. It's about the moments we spend creating, the people we connect with and the enjoyment we find along the way.
A refreshed craft space can help make room for all of that.
Spring reminds us that growth doesn't happen all at once. It happens gradually, in small steps, with a little sunshine, patience and room to flourish.
The same can be true of our creativity.

You don't need to overhaul your entire craft room, finish every WIP or organise your yarn stash into a perfectly colour-coordinated display. Start with one small thing. Clear a little space, rediscover a forgotten skein or simply make your favourite crafting corner feel more inviting.
Then pick up your hooks or needles and enjoy the moment.
Because at the heart of every creative journey is the simple pleasure of making something with your hands and who knows, somewhere beneath that pile of yarn, patterns and unfinished projects, your next favourite creation might just be waiting to be discovered.
Happy spring cleaning, happy stash diving and, most importantly, happy making!
With love and yarn,
