Choosing the Right Fibre for Your Project
Ever wondered why one yarn creates a beautifully draping shawl while another makes the perfect hard-wearing sock? The answer starts with fibre.
This engaging and hands-on workshop is designed to help makers understand the characteristics of different fibres and how they influence the yarns we spin, buy, and use. Through touch, observation, and practical examples, you'll explore a range of natural and specialty fibres including wool, alpaca, silk, cotton, plant fibres, and luxury blends.
Learn how fibre properties such as softness, elasticity, strength, drape, warmth, and durability affect the finished fabric and determine which fibres are best suited to different projects. Whether you're a spinner choosing fibres for your next handspun yarn, a knitter selecting yarn for a garment, or a crocheter planning a special project, understanding fibre characteristics will help you make more informed and successful choices.
During the workshop you'll:
- Compare and handle a variety of fibre types and blends
- Learn the unique characteristics of common and specialty fibres
- Discover how fibre choice affects spinning, knitting, crochet, weaving, and felting projects
- Explore the relationship between fibre, yarn structure, and finished fabric
- Gain confidence in selecting the right fibre for your intended use
