A Cowl With Some Verve

A Cowl With Some Verve

So, picture this: I had just received a new shipment of Cleckheaton Verve 12 ply Yarn, and I was itching to get creative. Verve is 30% Acrylic and 70% Wool, and the colours are so vibrant they practically sing to you.

What's a crafty individual to do? Well, fear not, because this yarn fanatic has a plan!

What's the Plan you ask?

This intrepid crafter decided to create a super simple pattern to showcase the stunning colour changes in the Cleckheaton Verve yarn. This pattern is so easy, even a beginner could tackle it with confidence. No need to be a crochet guru to make something truly eye-catching!

A big thank you to Christine for testing the pattern!

What do I need?

You will need the following

  • 2 balls of Cleckheaton Verve in a colour way of your choosing (I used Blaze 8701)!
  • Scissors
  • Needle for weaving in the ends
  • 6.00 mm Crochet Hook - I used a Tulip Etimo Red.

Stitches used and abbreviations (in UK terms):

CH - chain

ST - stitch

SS - slip stitch

DC - double crochet

HTR - Half Treble Crochet

FHTR - Foundation Half Treble Crochet

BPHTR - Back Post Half Treble Crochet

Half Treble Crochet Foundation Stitch

I love this stitch, it creates the perfect stretchy foundation.  I used to detest that first row when I had to double or treble crochet into the chains I had made.  I always found it fiddly, and more often than not that first row of chains was a different tension to the rest of the project. With the foundation stitch I don’t have these issues, it’s fantastic, I hope you get as much use out of it as I do!!!

  1. Slip stitch on hook
  2. Chain 2
  3. Put hook through 2nd chain from hook making sure you place your hook through 2 strands. Yarn over, pull up loop. (2 loops on hook)
  4. Yarn over, pull through the first loop only (chain stitch made)
  5. Yarn over, pull through all loops on hook (half treble crochet made)
  6. Put hook through 2 strands of previous chain stitch. Yarn over, pull up a loop.
  7. Yarn over, pull through the first loop only (chain stitch made)
  8. Yarn over, pull through all loops (half treble crochet made)
  9. Continue from 6-8 until desired length achieved.
I find it easier to turn my work so that the foundation stitches are working down, like a normal chain would.
