The Art of Self-Care: Crochet, Massages and Our Tribe

The Art of Self-Care: Crochet, Massages and Our Tribe

As many of you already know I attended the Crochet Guild Australia Conference last week. Whilst a little bit tiring, it was a sensational week where I had the opportunity to fill my cup to overflowing after spending time with some absolutely amazing humans.

I was there with a couple of different hats on...

1. CGA Committee Member,

2. Yarn Lover (we had a fabulous Yarn Market),

3. CGA Conference Lead,

4. YMC Owner Sponsoring the Shelley Husband Book Signing Event

5. Passionate Crocheter!

We had a focus on positive mental health, self care and wellbeing and I think that was embraced by everyone!

In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, it's easy to forget the importance of taking care of ourselves. Amid deadlines, responsibilities, and constant digital connectivity, carving out moments for self-care becomes essential for maintaining balance and overall wellbeing.  Activities like crochet, massages, and holistic practices contribute to nurturing our minds and bodies.

Crochet: A Therapeutic Craft

Crochet, often seen as a hobby, transcends mere pastime when it comes to self-care. Engaging in this craft involves repetitive motions that can induce a state of calm and focus, akin to meditation. The rhythmic flow of looping yarn into intricate patterns not only produces beautiful creations but also reduces stress and promotes mindfulness. The satisfaction of completing a project boosts self-esteem and creativity, offering a tangible reminder of our capability to create beauty amidst chaos.

We had a few tables in the midst of everything for people to sit, stitch and chat.  It was lovely - I even managed to get a few stitches in myself in between chatting on the microphone!

The Healing Power of Massages

Massage therapy is another powerful tool in the self-care arsenal. Beyond its indulgent connotations, regular massages have proven health benefits. They alleviate muscle tension, improve circulation, and release endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. Whether it's a professional deep tissue massage or a soothing self-massage at home with essential oils, the tactile experience of touch nurtures our physical bodies and relaxes our minds. It's a profound way to unwind and rejuvenate after a taxing day or week.

We were supported by the Massage Assocation of Australiia at the Conference who provided free Neck, Shoulder and/or hand massages.  They were amazing!  So generous with their skills and their time!

Embracing Holistic Wellbeing

Wellbeing encompasses more than physical relaxation; it extends to nurturing our mental and emotional health. Practices like mindfulness meditation, yoga, and aromatherapy offer holistic approaches to self-care. Mindfulness cultivates present-moment awareness, reducing anxiety and enhancing resilience in the face of challenges. Yoga integrates movement, breath, and meditation to harmonize mind-body connection, fostering flexibility and inner peace. Aromatherapy harnesses the therapeutic properties of essential oils to uplift mood or promote relaxation through scent, adding a sensory dimension to self-care routines.

Integrating Self-Care into Daily Life

Incorporating these practices into daily life doesn't require extravagant time commitments. It's about prioritising moments of self-nurture amidst our schedules. Whether it's dedicating fifteen minutes to crochet before bed, booking a monthly massage appointment, or starting each morning with a brief meditation, consistency is key. These intentional acts of self-care ripple outward, influencing our interactions with others and enhancing our overall quality of life.

Our Mandala competition was a representation of how to focus on self care, meditative processes and overall wellbeing.  Viki was our amazing winner and not only was her Mandala absolutely sublime but the way in which she displayed it was extremely beautiful.

Our Tribe

Belonging to a group can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment. When you feel like you belong, you are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and productive. Fitting in can also boost your self-esteem and confidence, as you feel accepted and valued by those around you. Additionally, being part of a group can lead to new opportunities, friendships, and personal growth.

Overall, finding your tribe, fitting in, and belonging are essential aspects of human nature. By connecting with others, you can experience a sense of community, support, and acceptance that can positively impact your life in numerous ways.

One of the things that I found the most rewarding over the last week was spending time with people that I had a shared passion with...passion for kindness, sharing, crochet and of course yarn!

Conclusion

Self-care isn't selfish; it's a fundamental investment in our own health and happiness. By embracing activities like crochet, massages, and holistic wellbeing practices, we honour our bodies, minds, and spirits. In doing so, we cultivate resilience, balance, and a deeper sense of self-awareness. So, let's weave self-care into the fabric of our lives, one stitch, one massage, and one mindful breath at a time. Remember, you deserve the care you give to others—perhaps even more.
